Newsrooms fertile ground for burnout among layoff survivors

High levels of stress "coupled with journalists' often priest-like commitment and passion for the work" makes journalism "a fertile field for burnout development," reports Scott Reinardy, assistant professor in the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Kansas. In this piece, Reinardy touches on the case of former journalist Reni Winter, and reports on several studies he has conducted over the past six years examining the rate and causes of burnout among journalists.

ASNE joins amicus briefs tackling unusual issues

In the Federal Communications Commission v. AT&T case in the U.S. Supreme Court, ASNE joined a brief arguing that conferring personal privacy rights on corporations will seriously undermine news coverage of corporate activities. The second case, in a federal appeals court, focuses on the procedural issue of when the statute of limitations begins running in a defamation case filed against a blog. ASNE signed onto a brief arguing that blogs should be treated like mainstream media for the purpose of establishing the publication date in defamation cases.

News in the Line of Fire: Calling on support from U.S.news organizations

Catalina Botero, of the Interamerican Commission on Human Rights, told a two-day meeting of border news editors that often U.S.-based news organizations can use their better protected media platforms to report wrongdoing and injustices that their Latin American counterparts are fighting and dying to publish: “We do not want heroes,” she said, in Spanish. “We want journalists who can continue to do their jobs in safe conditions.”

Anecdotes, watchwords and lessons learned offered by a panel of editors from both sides of the El Paso-Ciudad Juárez twin-cities area at the opening session of News in the Line of Fire, a bilingual two-day summit convened at the University of Texas at El Paso by the American Society of News Editors and the Inter American Press Association. Appearing on the panel were Armando Vélez, editor-in-chief of El Diário de El Paso, Alfredo Quijano, editor of El Norte de Ciudad Juárez and Christopher V. Lopez, executive editor of the El Paso Times. The moderator was Wendy Benjaminson, the Houston-based news editor for The Associated Press.

Scott Bosley gives the Batten Lecture at Davidson College

Professor of Public Policy, a chair named in honor of the late Knight Ridder executive. On Nov. 16, Bosley delivered the annual Batten Lecture, in which he discussed the pressures the news industry faces, the need for independent news reporting and the role of emotion in gaining and keeping audiences.
