As an added bonus, every attendee will receive travel (airfare, baggage, hotel and/or mileage) reimbursements of up to $300

More details about the sessions:

  • Former Central Intelligence Agency officer Mark Lowenthal and others at the Intelligence and Security Academy will turn a Merrill College computer lab into a hacker cell to teach you how to gain access to someone else's network and also let you watch a cyberattack as it spreads.
  • A government psychologist will explain the mind of the criminal hacker.
  • A forensic expert will reveal the vulnerabilities facing local governments and the challenges to police investigators.
  • Herb Lin, senior research scholar for cyber policy and security at Stanford University's Center for International Security and Cooperation, will explain cyber war.
  • Ashley Gauthier, a lawyer at National Public Radio, will outline new obstacles to accessing digitized government records.
  • Industry leaders will explain just how much personal data corporations are collecting from your iPhone and other devices and how much data is being stolen from corporations large and small.
  • Siobhan Gorman, award-winning former cyber reporter at The Wall Street Journal, will lead a story-brainstorming session.

Sessions will be moderated by Dana Priest, Merrill College's Knight Chair in Public Affairs Journalism and two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post reporter.

The workshop will start at 8 a.m. Friday, June 3, and conclude at noon Saturday, June 4, at Merrill College's John S. and James L. Knight Hall (7765 Alumni Drive, College Park, MD 20742), six miles outside of the District of Columbia. A Thursday welcome cocktail hour, Friday meals and Saturday breakfast will be provided.

ASNE members receive a discounted registration rate of $150, and nonmembers can attend for $250. Editors have first preference for registration. Because of the hands-on nature of the workshop, it is limited to 36 attendees. Registration won't be considered complete until a short survey regarding American newsroom expertise on cyber issues is filled out. The survey link is provided on the registration page when you click on the button below.

A block of rooms are available until May 9 at the new College Park Marriott Hotel & Conference Center, two short blocks from Knight Hall, at 3501 University Blvd. E., Hyattsville, MD 20783. Attendees must call Globetrotter Travel at 301-570-0800 or 800-322-7032 to make their hotel reservations at the discounted rate of $119/night for single and $139/night for double. Any cancellations must be made through the travel agency.

To receive travel reimbursements of up to $300, attendees will need to submitt a receipt to ASNE at asne@asne.org with the subject line "Cybersecurity workshop reimbursement."

The workshop is sponsored by the Hewlett Foundation's Cyber Initiative, whose goal is to "help develop a cybersecurity field capable of developing thoughtful, long-term solutions to the whole range of complex technical and public policy problems posed by the Internet."
